MILITARY

The Mandalorian military structure is arranged into culturally rooted ranks and institutions operating along both clan and state lines. As a result, Manda'toma maintains sector and central forces while clans retain levies of their own. Loyalty to the state is strongly expected due to the culture of the founding Mandalorian Defenders, but clan autonomy is preserved as a practical and ideological necessity.

Inter-clan rivalry and conflict are expected and, within limits, permitted. However, full-scale wars between clans are rarely tolerated, and the destruction of a clan through overwhelming invasion is not permitted. Rules govern the acquisition, punishment, and dissolution of clans, and are enforced as much to prevent destabilisation as to preserve Mandalorian continuity.

Clans may structure their levies according to local tradition and leadership preference, while the standing Manda'toma military maintains a consistent hierarchy. During major crises, prominent clan leaders may be elevated within the national command structure and assigned oversight of lesser clans or combined formations as required.

MANDA'TOMA ARMOUR

Armour within the Mandalorian state is generally standardised, drawing from the design traditions of the Mandalorian Protectors who served as spiritual precursors to the Defenders that later forged Manda'toma (despite rumours that renegade Imperial Knights were involved in the state's early formation). While personalisation is common within clans, the standing military expects uniformity, with colours and identifiers denoting rank rather than personal preference or spiritual meaning.

Where armour has been heavily customised during periods of large-scale drafting or prolonged war, efforts are made to restore rank readability through common markers such as capes, sashes, or other ornaments. These measures are intended to preserve battlefield recognition and command clarity without fully suppressing clan identity.

The Mandalorian Knights also sit within the hierarchy and are beholden to it. Numbering few and enjoying a close relationship with Mandalore the Provider (who is suspected of being a knight), they wield uniform silver blades and are typically seen only in serious conflicts, internal or external. In large engagements they often fulfil Rally Master roles or operate as specialist elements, frequently semi-independently.
