DESCRIPTION

The Rift Jedi are an independent Light Side Force tradition recognised under the terms of the Belsmuth-Quelii Treaty as the official defensive order of the Outer Rim Alliance. Founded during the Second Outer Rim Conflict by Jedi who rejected the policies of the Reborn Jedi Order, the Rift combines traditional Jedi teachings with a civic philosophy centred upon public service, local accountability and active participation in the communities it protects.

Although descended directly from the Reborn Jedi Order and preserving many ancient Jedi customs, the Rift Jedi reject the notion that Jedi should stand apart from ordinary society. They permit marriage, maintain family relationships, encourage employment beyond Jedi service and openly participate in civilian life. Their members may be found serving as pilots, teachers, engineers, doctors, police officers, diplomats and labourers alongside their duties as Jedi.

Since the conclusion of the Second Outer Rim Conflict, the Rift Jedi have become inseparable from the development of the modern Outer Rim Alliance. In addition to serving as protectors of the Alliance, they have played a major role in professionalising its armed forces, developing its modern starfighter doctrine and acting as mediators between member worlds. Although legally subordinate to the civilian institutions of the Alliance, the office of the Rift Commander simultaneously serves as Commander-in-Chief of the Alliance Militia, making the Order one of the most influential institutions within the frontier.

HISTORY

The Schism

The Rift Jedi trace their origins to the growing ideological divisions that emerged within the Reborn Jedi Order during the decades preceding the Second Outer Rim Conflict. Many younger Jedi increasingly questioned the prevailing philosophy of Waayism, arguing that the Order had become overly detached from the ordinary citizens it existed to protect. The growing influence of GalactaWerks throughout the Outer Rim, together with repeated refusals by the High Council to intervene in regional crises, convinced many that neutrality had become indistinguishable from inaction.

The breaking point came during the Cathar Schism of 1,190 ABY. Led by Jedi Master Zam Kessar, almost one thousand Jedi publicly resigned from the Reborn Order rather than participate in military action against the newly-declared Outer Rim Alliance. Branded traitors by many within the Republic, the defectors instead pledged themselves to defending the frontier populations amongst whom many had already served for years.

Throughout the Second Outer Rim Conflict, the so-called Rift Jedi became one of the defining symbols of Alliance resistance. Their presence transformed the Alliance from a loose collection of planetary defence forces into a disciplined military coalition capable of resisting the Judicial Forces and GalactaWerks. Although heavily outnumbered, Rift commanders developed many of the operational doctrines still employed by the Alliance Fleet today.

Recognition

Following the Belsmuth-Quelii Treaty in 1,195 ABY, the Republic formally withdrew all criminal charges against the surviving Rift Jedi. The Treaty recognised the Order as the official defensive Force organisation of the autonomous Outer Rim Alliance, whilst simultaneously restricting its authority almost entirely to Alliance territory except where specific diplomatic agreements permitted otherwise.

This settlement permanently divided the modern Jedi tradition into two recognised institutions. Whilst the Reborn Jedi remained guardians of the Republic, the Rift became guardians of the frontier. Relations between the two Orders have remained cautious ever since, marked by philosophical disagreement but generally avoiding open hostility. Joint operations have occasionally taken place against pirates, Sith cults and other galactic threats, whilst many individual Jedi continue to maintain friendships dating back to their years together within the Reborn Order.

PHILOSOPHY

The Rift Jedi believe that the Force exists to serve life rather than institutions. Whilst accepting much of the ancient Jedi tradition inherited from the Old Jedi Order, they reject the belief that emotional attachment, family life or political disengagement are necessary prerequisites for remaining within the Light Side.

Unlike the Reborn Jedi, the Rift does not view itself as standing above society. Instead, its members are expected to become part of the communities they protect. Jedi are encouraged to know local people personally, understand regional cultures and spend much of their careers living amongst ordinary citizens rather than within temples. Many hold secondary occupations alongside their Jedi responsibilities, believing that practical experience produces wiser guardians than institutional isolation.

Marriage and family life are openly permitted. Children continue to be recruited from across the Alliance with the informed consent of their parents or guardians, but unlike previous Jedi traditions, contact with family is actively encouraged wherever healthy and practical. The Order considers strong personal relationships to be a source of resilience rather than inevitable corruption, provided they are governed by honesty, self-awareness and responsibility.

The Rift also welcomes adult recruits. Former soldiers, police officers, miners, doctors, engineers, pilots and labourers have all entered Jedi training later in life after discovering Force sensitivity or choosing to dedicate themselves to the Order. This diversity has produced an organisation considerably older and professionally broader than most historical Jedi institutions.

The Tenets

Rather than adopting a formal Jedi Code, the Rift teaches a series of practical guiding principles known collectively as the Tenets of the Rift. These are intended not as immutable doctrine but as continual reminders of a Jedi's responsibility to the people they serve.

  • The people come first.
  • The Force is a gift to be shared.
  • Compassion demands action.
  • Power must answer to responsibility.
  • Truth is found among the people.
  • Duty begins at home.
  • Attachment is a strength when governed by wisdom.
  • Peace must sometimes be defended.
  • Learn always. Serve always.
  • Leave every world better than you found it.

Whilst critics frequently dismiss the Tenets as little more than political rhetoric, supporters argue that they successfully encapsulate the practical civic philosophy that has defined the Order since its foundation.

ORGANISATION

Unlike the highly hierarchical Reborn Jedi Order, authority within the Rift is comparatively decentralised. Overall leadership rests with the Rift Commander, elected jointly by the Rift Assembly and the civilian institutions of the Outer Rim Alliance. The Commander simultaneously serves as Commander-in-Chief of the Alliance Militia, reflecting the close constitutional relationship between the Order and the Alliance.

Supporting the Commander is the First Guardian, who acts as deputy leader of the Order and frequently oversees day-to-day Jedi operations whilst the Commander attends wider military and governmental responsibilities. The remainder of the senior leadership consists of the Guardians, many of whom command regional sectors, training facilities or specialist operational divisions.

Legislative authority resides within the elected Rift Assembly, whose members are chosen by the Jedi themselves. Although military matters remain subject to Alliance law, the Assembly determines internal policy, doctrine, education and admissions, ensuring that the Order remains accountable to its own members rather than solely to the government it serves.

TRAINING

Training within the Rift Jedi Order differs substantially from that of the Reborn Jedi, whilst nevertheless preserving many traditions dating back thousands of years. The Order continues to believe that early training provides the safest environment in which Force-sensitive children may develop their abilities, and many recruits therefore join whilst young. Unlike the Reborn Order, however, children enter only with the informed consent of their parents or guardians, and are encouraged to maintain healthy contact with their families throughout their upbringing.

The Order also welcomes adult applicants regardless of previous occupation or age. Former Judicial officers, soldiers, pilots, engineers, doctors, miners, farmers and labourers have all become successful Rift Jedi after discovering Force sensitivity later in life. Whilst adult recruits often face greater challenges mastering traditional Jedi disciplines, they frequently bring valuable practical experience and emotional maturity that younger students lack.

Training combines the traditional disciplines of meditation, lightsaber combat, diplomacy, history and Force philosophy with a considerably broader practical curriculum. Every Recruit receives instruction in emergency medicine, search and rescue, disaster relief, survival, local law, engineering fundamentals, firearms, starship operation and community engagement. Jedi are expected to become capable public servants before they become exceptional warriors.

Unlike the Reborn Order's strict Master-Padawan lineage, instruction within the Rift is considerably more collaborative. Although Guardians frequently mentor individual Recruits, students routinely learn from multiple instructors throughout their development, reflecting the Order's belief that wisdom is rarely monopolised by any one teacher.

LIGHTSABERS AND EQUIPMENT

The construction of a personal lightsaber remains one of the defining milestones of every Rift Jedi. Like their counterparts within the Reborn Order, members regard the weapon as both a practical tool and a deeply personal symbol of responsibility. Owing to the continuing scarcity of naturally occurring kyber crystals, the ancient tradition of inheritance remains commonplace. When a Jedi dies, their crystal is often passed to one of their former students or another member of the Order, creating lineages that in some cases stretch back centuries.

Unlike many earlier Jedi traditions, however, the Rift places little philosophical emphasis upon exclusive reliance on the lightsaber. Members routinely train with blasters, slugthrowers, survival equipment and civilian tools appropriate to their specialist roles. A Jedi serving as a pilot may carry a sidearm alongside their lightsaber, whilst those undertaking rescue operations frequently prioritise engineering or medical equipment instead. The Order teaches that wisdom lies not in the weapon itself, but in knowing which tool best serves the situation.

Uniform regulations are similarly relaxed. Whilst ceremonial robes remain in use, most Rift Jedi wear practical clothing suited to their environment, often incorporating armour, flight gear or militia equipment. The only consistent requirement is the display of the Rift insignia, signifying both their authority and accountability whilst serving amongst the public.

RHEN VAR HEADQUARTERS

The principal headquarters of the Rift Jedi are located within the restored temples of Rhen Var. Chosen for its historical significance, isolation and abundance of ancient Jedi ruins, the frozen world provides an environment well suited to contemplation whilst remaining sufficiently distant from the political centres of the Alliance to preserve the Order's institutional independence.

The headquarters serves simultaneously as temple, academy, administrative centre and operational command facility. Unlike the monumental Jedi Temple on Coruscant, however, Rhen Var is intentionally modest in appearance. Large portions of the complex occupy restored ancient structures integrated with modern Alliance architecture, symbolising the Order's belief that tradition should support the present rather than dominate it.

Numerous smaller academies, outposts and retreat centres operate throughout Alliance space. Some function as permanent training facilities, whilst others consist of little more than isolated watch stations maintained by one or two Jedi monitoring regions considered strategically or spiritually significant.

MILITARY SERVICE

Although first and foremost a civilian protective order, the Rift Jedi have become inseparable from the military development of the Outer Rim Alliance. Following the Second Outer Rim Conflict, successive Administrators entrusted the Jedi with responsibility for developing doctrine, officer education and strategic planning across the newly-formed Alliance Militia.

The office of Rift Commander therefore carries a unique constitutional responsibility. Whilst civilian authority remains vested in the ORA Synod and Administrator, the Commander serves simultaneously as Commander-in-Chief of the Alliance Militia, coordinating naval, planetary and Jedi operations during times of crisis. In practice, operational command is frequently delegated to militia officers and the First Guardian, allowing the Commander to balance military leadership with broader governmental responsibilities.

Many Guardians command major naval formations or militia task forces, whilst Knights routinely serve alongside planetary defence units, Rangers and humanitarian organisations. Their military philosophy places considerable emphasis upon disciplined restraint, civilian protection and decentralised decision-making rather than overwhelming force.

STARFIGHTER TRADITION

Piloting has become one of the defining characteristics of the Rift Jedi. Whereas previous Jedi Orders viewed starfighters primarily as transport or military necessity, the Rift considers advanced flight training an essential component of modern Jedi service. Nearly every Knight qualifies as a military pilot before completing their training.

Working closely with Verpine Spaceworks, the Order played a central role in developing the VV/RJ-series Rift Starfighter and Rift Bomber. These craft combine the recognisable silhouette of earlier Jedi starfighters with Alliance engineering principles, emphasising versatility, reliability and ease of maintenance. Rift squadrons frequently operate independently of the Alliance Fleet, responding rapidly to piracy, humanitarian crises and frontier emergencies across Alliance territory.

MISSIONS

The majority of Rift Jedi spend comparatively little time within temples. Instead, they are permanently assigned to sectors, member worlds or communities where they undertake an extraordinarily diverse range of responsibilities. Mediation, criminal investigation, disaster response, anti-piracy patrols, diplomatic liaison, archaeological recovery, humanitarian assistance and conventional military operations all fall within the Order's remit.

Many Jedi deliberately establish long-term homes within the communities they serve, often remaining on a single world for years or even decades. The Order believes lasting familiarity with local cultures produces wiser protectors than continual reassignment throughout the galaxy.

Whilst their legal authority is largely confined to Alliance territory, the Republic and numerous independent governments have occasionally granted temporary jurisdiction to Rift Jedi operating during humanitarian emergencies or joint security operations. Such deployments remain politically sensitive but have generally proven successful.

RELATIONS WITH THE REBORN JEDI

Relations between the Rift Jedi and the Reborn Jedi Order remain among the most complex in the modern galaxy. Institutionally, the two Orders continue to disagree over doctrine, governance and the proper relationship between Jedi and wider society. Memories of the Second Outer Rim Conflict remain painful for both organisations, particularly amongst those who once trained together before finding themselves on opposing sides of the battlefield.

Despite these disagreements, outright hostility is rare. Both Orders recognise one another as legitimate Light Side traditions and have cooperated against Sith organisations, Dark Jedi cults, criminal syndicates and other galactic threats on numerous occasions. Formal meetings between the High Council and Rift Assembly occur infrequently but remain cordial, reflecting a shared recognition that ideological differences are insignificant when compared with the dangers posed by the dark side.

On a personal level, relationships are frequently warmer still. Many friendships survived the Schism, and it is not uncommon for members of both Orders to exchange correspondence, undertake joint archaeological expeditions or quietly assist one another despite institutional disagreements. The Rift's greatest criticism of the Reborn Order is not its commitment to peace, but what it perceives as an excessive reluctance to act. Conversely, many Reborn Jedi privately admire the Rift's compassion whilst fearing that its closeness to politics may one day compromise its judgement.

PUBLIC PERCEPTION

Amongst the citizens of the Outer Rim Alliance, the Rift Jedi enjoy exceptionally high levels of public trust. Their visibility within local communities, willingness to undertake ordinary civic duties and readiness to place themselves in danger alongside civilians have fostered an image of approachable guardians rather than distant mystics. Many children grow up personally knowing the Jedi assigned to their settlement, and it is not unusual for local celebrations, memorials and civic ceremonies to include Rift representatives.

Outside Alliance space, opinion is considerably more divided. Supporters view the Rift as a successful modernisation of the Jedi tradition that restored public confidence following centuries of decline. Critics argue that the Order has become too closely entwined with a regional government to claim genuine independence. The Rift itself generally accepts such criticism as an unavoidable consequence of choosing to stand beside the people it serves rather than apart from them.
