Description

Almost every landmass on the planet of Öetrago is rich in vegetation. With a mix of vast grassland and dense rainforest of the planet Ithor, the Ithorian people have learned to cultivate the vegetation and live rich lives with the land. While largely untouched, there are a number of permanent settlements on the planet, which are home to many Ithorians who choose not to live life as part of a herd or to the few herds that prefer not to migrate (several tribes have formed around grounded herdships and have grown settlements around them. Some settlements also are home to non-Ithorian races who have chosen to settle or conduct business on the planet.

The largest settlement is Mooko City which encompasses the entirety of Mooko Island. It is the primary spaceport for Öetrago and was allowed to be fully-developed by the settling Ithorian for use as a diplomatic stage to co-ordinate with the rest of the galaxy.

The Ithorians on Öetrago subscribe to a herd system, with every herd leader being the highest ranked individuals within society. Herd leaders (Or Herd Patriarch/Matriarchs) are chosen because they are great spiritual priests or healers. However, Ithorian herds will travel across the continents or islands they reside in, which makes a global form of governance difficult. A governing herd, the Civus Herd, was therefore established on Mooko in order to rule over planetary business and only consult with other herds when deemed appropriate. While this herd was culturally no more important than any other, its importance in galactic affairs made it the spokesperson for all other herds on the planet.

This tribe lives a significantly different lifestyle to most other tribes given its residence within Mooko City. The tribe leader is not always force-sensitive as is the tradition with most other tribes as diplomatic skills are placed of key importance within their tribe. Many members of this tribe are diplomats or traders. Most Ithorian spacers originating from Öetrago will associate themselves with this tribe.

History

Before the Tainting of Ithor (12,000 BBY)

Öetrago had been of interest to the Ithorians many years before their forced migration from Ithor by the Yuuzhan Vong given its wide variety of flora and fauna. Ithorians found themselves fond of the native fly-like species, which they named Finjik. Settlements had been established on the planet as early as 12,000 BBY by early spacefaring Ithorians trading within the Outer Rim soon after first contact with the Republic. Some other species had shown interest in the planet given its favourable conditions but Ithorians made the strongest colonisation efforts after the discovery of the Finjik.

While originally only colonised by the more-spacefaring Ithorians, after the retrofitting of Herd ships with spaceflight technology, several herds visited Öetrago and a number of potential Herd Leaders left their birth herds and formed the first herds of Öetrago. Herds operated differently to those of Ithor as the Ithorians could interact directly with the planet’s surface rather than living above the “Mother Jungle”. The Herds developed their own migratory customs and became very distinct from the tribes of the Herdships.

Exodus from Ithor (25 ABY)

After the desecration of Ithor’s surface, many herds chose to join the branch of their species living on Öetrago. However, some herdships were reluctant to adapt to the migratory lifestyle of the local Herds and so many grounded their Herdships and built settlements around their old home. This led to a rapid spread of vegetation from the Herdships (and, therefore from Ithor itself) onto Öetrago’s surface. Many see the Herdships as the seeds of the “Mother Jungle” who has begun to grow again on this new world across the galaxy. Over many years the tribes have begun to live together but there are still many variations in the way of life which are passed through generations of Herd Leaders.

Öetrago and the Third Republic (330-990 ABY)

Öetrago pledged its support to the Grand Proclamation along with the rest of the Mayagil sector, although the planet itself played a fairly minor role in the events surrounding the reorganisation of the Republic. The first Galactic Senator in the Third Republic Senate from the Mayagil sector was Doobious Maln, a male Bith from Clak'dor VII. Around this time, the Civus Ithorian herd rose to prominence and took over the day-to-day diplomatic affairs for the planet. An embassy for the Third Republic was built in Mooko City to facilitate visiting senators and other planetary diplomats.

During its time within the Third Republic, Ithorians become more involved with Republic words, primarily trading in ecosystem restoration services and native flora and fauna. Ithorian scientists have been able to successfully reverse engineer many Vongforming devices and have been instrumental in the recovery of many worlds thought to be beyond recovery. Despite this, Öetrago has managed to remain fairly independent, given its exports and services are not of interest to multiplanetary corporations, such as GalactaWerks.

Around 900ABY, several Ithorian ecosystem restoration companies (primarily from Öetrago) merged to form Mother's Aid, with the ultimate goal of being appointed the sole contractor on the Ithor Restoration Project and, utilising their reverse Vongforming techniques, complete the centuries-long regeneration project. However, Mother's Aid encountered difficulty securing complete rights to the project and, although some restoration zones have been granted to the Ithorian Company, they have encountered many more setbacks than anticipated and many have blamed the involvement of GalactaWerks in sabotaging restoration in order to maintain majority control over the project.

Tensions with the Outer Rim (990-1,195 ABY)

While the general Ithorian populace sympathised with the plight of the Outer Rim planets that attempted to withdraw from the Republic, Öetragan diplomats saw little need in endangering their own independence by supporting the Alliance and so backed the decision of their Sector as well as the Seswenna and Brema sectors to remain Third Republic loyalists. While Öetrago had no official army to raise to support the conflicts, a number of Herds dispatched members to provide field medics for Republic-aligned troops.

Maintaining hold of core sectors along the Rimma Trade Route allowed the Republic a key foothold into the Outer Rim, which allowed the overwhelmingly-GalactaWerks-controlled trade system Eriadu to choke supplies to the rest of the Outer Rim, which has been widely speculated to have shortened the conflict by years and saved billions of lives.

Recent events (1,195 ABY - Present)

In recent years, several Ithorian senators have been elected to represent the Mayagil sector, including present leader Wobar Cosh. Her tenure has continued to push for more Ithorian restoration projects for the struggling Mother's Aid Organisation, as well as working with the Bith to improve free trading from the sector, with the Eriadu trade centre dominating trade in the local sectors and making it difficult for planets further from the core trading inwards.

There has also been a push to build a luxury resort and trading space station in the sector, to replace the infamous Dunari's Rest Station that was decommissioned many years ago, in order to attract more interest to the sector. The new station, named Dunari's Delight is primarily a Kabalian and Bith project, but an Ithorian Herd has been brought in to build an arboretum on the station.

Key Herds

Civus.pngCivus Herd

Herd Leader: Patriarch Brumo Gobb

Appointed diplomatic Herd for the entirety of Öetrago, based on Mooko City. This herd is technically far larger than any other herd but this is, in truth, because it classifies any permanent resident of Mooko City as a member of the Herd, Ithorian or otherwise. Civus represents Öetrago in the Republic and in other Galactic affairs, with a permanent diplomatic embassy, currently run by Chief Republic-Öetrago Diplomatic Liaison Bruta Thort, who works closely with both the tribe leaders and the regional Senator to voice the people's wishes.

Elenca.pngElenca Herd

Herd Leader: Matriarch Mumin Mozo

A nomadic tribe found in Eastern Üssina, which is known for its strong healers. The Elenca herd is one of the more recent tribes to populate Öetrago, having formed after the decommissioning of an ancient herdship, which had roamed the galaxy for hundreds of years. The Elenca tribe provided many talented healers to the Republic side during the Outer Rim Conflicts.

Squalu.pngSqualu Herd

Herd Leader: Matriarch Futii Chopo

Based in the cold northern region of Üssina, Squalu is charged with maintaining one of the galaxy's largest seed vaults and they have possession of some seed species found nowhere else, from several extinct plants that thrive in habitats no longer found in the known galaxy. Many members of this tribe spend their time off world, either acquiring new seed specimens or scouting for systems with conditions suitable for extinct plant species to thrive. The rest of the tribe guard the vault, monitoring conditions as well as providing valuable teachings on agriculture to other tribes and species.

Kalco.pngKalco Herd

Herd Leader: Patriarch Necto Blints

Based in central Dunio, this tribe operates from a grounded Herdship deep within a sprawling rainforest. Many of the plant species that grow around their major settlements are direct descendants of plants on Ithor and the Kalco are often regarded as great lore-keepers of Ithor, building temples and monuments to the Mother Jungle. Several of the most recent Oracles have been from the Kalco herd and most Ithorians on Öetrago intend to attempt a great pilgrimage to their Herdship and many of the great temples at least once in their lifetime.

Partom.pngPartom Herd

Herd Leader: Patriarch Oni Jecku

The most well-renowned sea-faring Herd; based around the islands of Moz Malla and Moz Müt, this Herd is skilled at building watercrafts of all different shapes and sizes. They are particularly famous for luxury sea yachts made from some of the rich, oily wood found on the islands. Aside from the Civus herd, Partom is the most accepting of non-Ithorian herd members, with many aquatic races finding life on the islands pleasant and building a fishing trade, which the Ithorians have little use for.

Chastu.pngChastu Herd

Herd Leader: Matriarch Arna Weidon

An isolationist Herd that chooses to exclude itself from diplomatic affairs unless absolutely essential. A large but simple community based around their old grounded Herdship on Huyu Island, the people of Chastu live off the land and try to rely little on outside interference.

Kavanu.pngKavanu Herd

Herd Leader: Patriarch Gera Rindo

A nomadic Herd largely based in the drier Southern Üssina, the Kavanu tribe are descended from former galactic traders and scavengers that came to rest on Öetrago. While largely Ithorian, they have a small community of other species that work with them. Kavanu Herd members are good with machinery and are one of the only tribes that builds Starships; although nothing as near the complexity as planet-sized operations, their community produces a small supply of Ithorian trade ships and have even produced a new Herdship since their inception. Some tribe members provide ship repair, maintenance and upgrades, while others trade off world for parts and supplies.
